Asia Awards 2023: Best enterprise data management provider—S&P Global Market Intelligence
Product: EDM
Overview
EDM is S&P Global Market Intelligence’s flagship master data management platform. It is used by over 200 clients to help them make better use of their data and streamline their operations by pulling together disparate data types from multiple sources into a central hub to create consistent versions of the truth in a traceable environment. EDM is complemented by the firm’s Data Dictionary solution, which provides visibility of the data that is available across the enterprise in the same way that a data catalog would.
“It has been an exciting year following the conclusion of the S&P Global–IHS Markit merger. We have focused on ensuring the merger delivers enhanced value for our customers. This can be seen in the integration of S&P Global Sustainable1 datasets into EDM, which is helping customers progress sustainability initiatives and streamline compliance. We have also driven our software-as-a-service (SaaS) strategy forward, focusing on user empowerment. It is gratifying to have these initiatives recognized.”
Jamie Penniman, head of commercial strategy, software solutions, S&P Global Market Intelligence
The solution
EDM is a cloud-based data management platform that commingles disparate data types from multiple sources into a central hub, creating a consistent version of the truth in an audited environment. EDM allows user firms to keep their data decentralized, while data lineage ensures that they can track where data came from, who “touched” it and when, what rules were applied to it, and where it was distributed.
Secret sauce
EDM is an enterprise data management platform that has been refined over the past 15-plus years, based on the experiences of over 200 clients. Differentiators include implementation speed, flexibility, total cost of ownership, and compatibility with any type of data. The platform has an ambitious SaaS strategy, while the merger between IHS Markit and S&P Global in February 2022 has appreciably grown the combined entity’s expertise and available datasets, including ESG and private markets data.
Recent milestones
- Sustainability: Following the IHS Markit–S&P Global merger, the firm has integrated Sustainable1/Trucost data into EDM, helping clients manage ESG data and comply with regulations. Third-party ESG sources are also integrated into the platform.
- User empowerment advances: Drag-and-drop user interfaces are now available in the platform as part of the firm’s strategy to provide more user control.
- Snowflake integration: S&P Global has integrated EDM with Snowflake, allowing clients to access their data more easily via the Snowflake Data Cloud.
Future objectives
- SaaS delivery of next phases of the firm’s SaaS platform: S&P Global will continue to release more applications on its SaaS platform.
- No-code/low-code: S&P Global will provide data developers and stewards with the ability to define data-quality rules and metrics, and apply these to datasets within EDM, using no-code.
- Data access: S&P Global will reduce time to market by integrating additional S&P Global datasets into EDM.
Why they won
S&P Global wins yet another category across the WatersTechnology Awards portfolio on the back of its highly regarded EDM offering. EDM is unquestionably the most successful product in the history of the WatersTechnology Awards: It won the best data management product category in the inaugural BST Awards back in 2007 when it was part of London-based Cadis, and has since grown to become the industry’s data management gold standard platform that continues to evolve in line with its users’ needs and expectations.
