This morning 100 years ago, the Battle of the Somme started. By the end of the first day of the 141-day long campaign, 20,000 British troops were dead, with a further 40,000 injured.

In total, the British Empire (including troops from Australia, Bermuda, Canada, India, Newfoundland, New Zealand, South Africa and Southern Rhodesia) lost just shy of 480,000 men at the Somme, while France and Germany lost 250,000 and 235,000, respectively, in a battle that followed close on the heels of the Battle
