As India's capital markets work on bringing their operations technology up to the state of the art, practitioners are struggling with overregulation, however well-intentioned, according to industry watchers.

"Each new algorithm has to be approved by the exchange it is used on," says Anshuman Jaswal, senior analyst, capital markets, at  industry research firm Celent. "Similarly, sub-accounts under which trading is done have to be declared for direct market access (DMA)."
