UNIX of one flavor or another is quickly becoming the operating system of choice for high-end trader workstations. But the UNIX user interface -- i.e. screen lay-out and users' interaction with their applications -- has become a new battleground for heavyweight hardware suppliers trying to establish standards and gain market share.

This high-stakes competition pits Motif, the UNIX graphical user interface (GUI) developed and championed by Cambridge, Mass.-based Open Software Foundation (OSF)
