IHS Markit Launches Service for Mifid II Research Payments

RPA Manager will help in administrating research payment accounts, which have been created in response to European rules.

RPAs are one of the ways firms can pay for investment research.

Under the review of the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (Mifid II), the link between payments for research and execution is being severed to reduce potential conflicts of interest, and asset managers will have to pay commissions to brokers who provide the research. 

One of the ways to comply with the mandate, known as research unbundling, is for buy-side firms to establish Research Payment Accounts (RPAs) for each research provider. According to IHS Markit, this is where the RPA
