Whether dubbed chief data officers (CDOs) or something else, such as head of data management, C-level data executives are gaining authority and prominence among financial services firms.

They may still be battling with chief technology officers and chief information officers, however, says Kevin McGilloway, head of business development in the enterprise products and services unit of Bloomberg in New York. "I see tensions around who's gaining dominance in corporate policy," he says.
