Prior to the merger, O'Brien was CEO of Direct Edge for over six years, overseeing the strategic and operational affairs of the company, prior to which he was senior vice president at Nasdaq OMX, where he ran the exchange's new listings business, and managed its market data distribution business between 2004 and 2005, having joined Nasdaq through its acquisition of the Brut ECN.
