Users, Exchanges Still Split On Data Ownership, Fees

The issue of who owns and can redistribute market data continues to be a thorny issue, according to the panelists in the data ownership session at IMD 2005.

The users’ trades form the basis for exchanges’ order books, and hence their market data. Thus, firms are still unhappy that they are charged, or in some cases prohibited, from redistributing exchanges’ market data within their firms and to clients.

Meantime, exchanges and vendors—who believe that they add value to the data—are still clamping
